Cheryl was born and raised in Junction City, Kansas. She graduated from Junction City High School. Cheryl earned her bachelor's degree from Kansas State University. She began her teaching career at Saints Peter and Paul School in Seneca. For eighteen years, she taught at B&B Elementary. She has been teaching at Centralia Elementary School since 2016. Cheryl and her husband Darrin have three children, Jesslyn, Cole, and Peyton. In addition to teaching, Cheryl is actively involved in helping out with the family dairy operation.
