Career WebQuest

Introduction:

“Impossible!  I can’t decide now what I want to do with my life!  I’m only in middle school, after all.  How do they expect me to decide on a career now when I don’t even know what classes I’m going to take in high school?”

Does this feel familiar to you?  Chances are, by the time you reach the end of your eighth grade year, you have been asked about what you want to be when you grow up.  Do you have an answer?

Cooperative
Learning:

Face it.  Working with other people to meet an end goal is an important part of almost all jobs.  We may not like whom we work with, but we often don’t get a choice.

On this project, you will be assigned a partner.  In the case of an odd number in class, you may be working in a group of three.  It is important that you decide how you are going to work on this assignment, and that all members participate.  You may each choose a career, or you may choose careers that interest you both.  You must work together to complete Tasks 4, 5, and 6.

Evaluation:

Self-Evaluation Form
Grading Rubric

Part 1- Self-evaluation

Use the Self-evaluation form to rate yourselves on the project.  You will turn in one form per group.  Decide together how you will mark each item.

Part 2- Presentation Evaluation

Each student will fill out Worksheet #7 to record facts about other careers as well as rate the presentations of the other groups.  These scores will be averaged and combined with the teacher rating for a presentation grade.

Part 3- Teacher Grading Rubric

The teacher will grade each group based on the goals presented at the beginning of the projects, as well as the tasks performed.  Students will be aware of the grading rubric as well as their Self-evaluation form at the beginning of the project.

Conclusion:

Congratulations!  You hopefully now have an answer to the questions all those adults keep asking you: What do you think you want to be when you grow up?  Not only can you tell them what you want to do, you could also tell them a lot more!
